Alumni news: Career update from a NMU alumnus: Roberts Gailitis , Latvia
After graduation from Netherlands Maritime University I am continuing my studies in Riga Technical University. Recently I started my studies at Faculty of Engineering Economics and Management (FEEM) in Riga, Latvia. I am doing my PHD course in management science and economics and I think this is good way how to supplement my educational background from Netherlands Maritime University.
FEEM offers higher education of all levels in various specialisations of economics, entrepreneurship and management. The staff of the Faculty is engaged in academic and methodological work and conduct research in different sub-branches of economics and management.
Students learn the fundamentals of business operation, collect, analyze and interpret business performance indicators and master how to properly manage processes and resources to ensure their efficient utilisation. Specialists prepared by FEEM successfully work both in Latvia and abroad, they develop thorough understanding of social processes and their impact on the socio-economic environment. FEEM fosters analytical thinking and provides reliable guidelines for students’ further professional activities. FEEM graduates will always find their place in life.
I am planning to build my doctorate research upon my Master thesis, which will focus on maritime clusters and factors on which development of a maritime policy should be based.
Alumni networks worldwide
The Netherlands Maritime University has set up an Alumni society via the www.linkedin.com website. NMU has the opinion that it is of utmost importance to form a great network, to stay connected, even with ll the forthcoming students, lecturers, staff and university partners.
Furthermore the platform will be used to propagate and communicate various issues of intellectual concern to the university and the alumni, providing opportunities to create and maintain professional co-existence and friendship, based on shared experiences and affinity for Netherlands Maritime University.
Within the Netherlands there are several alumni organisations.
Institute Nuffic has an alumni network which can be found via their website. These pages are intended for all former scholarship holders (alumni). Nuffic would like to keep in touch with them after having completed the scholarship.
Their alumni activities aim to:
- continue contacts between alumni, and between alumni, their Dutch host institute and Nuffic;
- provide a regular information service on established Netherlands Alumni Associations (NAA’s);
- encourage exchanges of best practices between the various alumni associations;
- provide information on relevant developments in Dutch foreign policy, higher and other education, and scholarship programmes;
- make a positive contribution to the internationalization of higher education;
- use the experience, knowledge and insights gained by alumni during their study and research to benefit the current generation of scholarship holders and others interested in studying in the Netherlands in the future.
