Master shipping & transport fulfils market needs

Increasing demand for higher professional educated employees in the maritime industry

On the basis of extensive labour market research as well as through intensive contacts with the maritime industry, STC-Group has signaled an increasing demand for especially higher professional educated employees ashore in ports, shipping companies, inspection bodies (classification societies, Port State control authorities, flag administrations), insurance companies, shipbuilders and ship- repair companies, marine equipment manufacturers, etc. These employees should be able to manage the increasing number of tasks imposed on these companies and institutions by the recently adopted or proposed Community legislation on maritime safety.

Growing importance on efficient and effective international supply chain management and associated transport operations

A second development which has been observed is the globalization in trade, leading to a growing importance of international supply chain management and the management of multi- modal transport systems, transferring cargoes between seagoing vessels, road-, rail- , air- and inland waterway transport. The management of these integrated systems requires coordinated actions by government bodies, users and providers of these services. Government bodies must provide infrastructure and appropriate legal and institutional conditions. Users, such as manufacturers and traders, face an enlarged geographical scope of their operations. Many of them outsource their logistics activities to service providers.

Managers are needed who are not only fully competent in the maritime field, but also have a thorough understanding of the international supply chain as well as the variety of multi-modal transport nodes and networks that exist to move cargo around the world from sourcing location to the point of final consumption, thereby integrating airfreight and/or sea freight, river transport, port operations, transshipment, warehousing, inventory management, pick-up and delivery services and information management.

Need for a dedicated program to fulfil labour market needs

These developments require adequate education programs that deliver capable and knowledgeable managers for maritime companies,  government institutions and logistics and supply chain management companies.  However, at the same time there seems to be a discrepancy between the existing educational infrastructure in the maritime labour market, supply and demand of shipping knowledge and the needs from the labour market. In answer to these demands of the business community, STC-Group has developed a Master program on ‘Shipping & Transport’.

Intensive education program in Rotterdam for course participants

The course participants are offered a large number of courses that will prepare them for top- management positions in the maritime business world. The Master uses a wide range of teaching methods, such as lectures, case-studies, group work and presentations, simulators, seminars and excursions. The transfer of knowledge is one important aspect of the program, but the development of interpersonal and communicative skills, and teamwork are just as important for the future growth of the course participants.

The curriculum comprises a broad range of courses that are tailored to the maritime and transport industry. Further background information can be found under Program and Course Outline.

All course participants are required to attend all lectures, workshops, case- studies and take all exams. The thesis project can be worked on during the academic year. It is therefore important to select a topic as soon as possible. The Thesis Coordinator will assist the course participants in this selection process. The preparation of the program and the careful selection of the course participants requires a thorough planning. Therefore a number of deadlines and term dates are fixed in advance.
