Thesis assignment

The Thesis assignment will be a maritime research project that is expected to bring together:

  • Maritime knowledge
  • Theoretical framework
  • Problem solving techniques and competences

Participants are expected to select an actual problem statement within a maritime (related) organisation or environment. This problem statement must cover different knowledge elements and competences from various modules from the Master Shipping and Transport. The Thesis assignment will be the tangible proof for participants to show his/her capability to clearly scope a problem statement, select and use theoretical concepts that enable problem analysis and diagnosis and are the foundation for formulation of conclusions and recommendations. Throughout the Thesis period participants are coached by a Thesis Supervisor.

Participants are responsible for defining their own projects in close cooperation the Thesis supervisor and locate and negotiate with a suitable company who will ‘sponsor’ the Thesis.

The Thesis subjects can be obtained from the participant’s current employer. But it is also possible that Thesis subjects can be obtained via:

  • Companies that have a close connection with STC-Group/NMU-R
  • Running research projects within STC-Group
  • Running research projects within STC B.V.
  • Running research projects within our knowledge hubs
  • Companies in the country of origin of the participant

Within the foundation STC-Group there is a permanent presence of consultancy projects within the logistics field. The projects contain in general a lot of topics that are also teached in the Master Shipping and Transport. The participant will not participate in the commercial project itself, but in an independent position. The advantage is that the student actively will be confronted with applied research and at the same time has the space to broaden its knowledge if he participates in research that results out of a consultancy case, but is outside the commercial project itself.

All participants must defend their Thesis within a closed session for the Defense Committee.
