Port Design & Management (6,5 EC's)

Ports are important nodes in the worldwide transportation system. The course Port Design and Management aims to explain all elements that are involved in the planning, design, management and optimisation of ports, terminals and navigation fairways. Multiple perspectives are provided: port economics, finance, environment, hydro dynamics, risk analyses, design, construction and navigation in constraint waterways. Specific attention is given to port organisation and management. Management games and simulators are used in order to create a simulated setting in which students are actually tested on their knowledge as well as their managerial skills.

Inland Waterways (2,5 EC's)

Since ancient times, inland waterways have played a crucial role in the development of cities, economies and countries. A large variety of waterways is discussed using examples from over the world. The objective for this course is to provide students a comprehensive understanding of inland waterways and water transport. In this course the importance and potential of inland waterway systems around the world are presented. The students are provided with a thorough background on transport needs as well as spatial planning for inland waterways. It also pays attention to the need for adaptation and modernisation of waterways to recent developments such as tourism, container traffic, specific cargo and vessels, hazardous cargo, instrumentarium and civil works.
