Graduates from all over the world, united through a Master Degree! Graduation ceremony Class March 2010.

On 23 November 2011, nine students received a Master Degree of the Master Shipping and Transport program, offered by Netherlands Maritime University, during an official graduation ceremony. This group started in March 2010 at Netherlands Maritime University’s branch location in Gwangyang South-Korea; STC-Korea.

The graduation ceremony took place in Rotterdam, STC-Group’s headquarters. In this city, home base of one of the largest and most advanced ports in the world, the graduates were united again after the completion of their final thesis project.

The fresh graduates come from a variety of countries, such as Brazil, China, Ghana, Malaysia, South-Africa. This international mix emphasizes the international character of the program; students from all over the world are united in STC-NMU’s Master program. Besides the professional knowledge and skills the program provides, a long lasting global friendship is also part of the added value of the Master program!

Thesis research project
After one year of full-time lectures, excursions, training and (management) skills development, the students worked independently on a thesis project. Many students returned to their home country to carry out profound research on the topic chosen for the thesis. Students choose the topics themselves. Under supervision of STC-NMU lecturers, students narrow down the topic to a proportional and challenging problem statement. As always, interesting thesis topics were researched; One of the Korean students elaborated on the new one-hub port policy of Korea and the impact on the port of Gwangyang, another Korean on the financial feasibility of new port expansion project. A Brazilian student did a successful research on the impact of the introduction of the so-called ‘valemaxes’ on freight rates development in the dry bulk market. Another interesting topic was addressed by one of the Chinese students, who researched the development of maritime English education and examination in China.  Furthermore, two studies in South African port management were conducted, one focusing on cargo volume throughput of Richards Bay, the other on port public private partnerships. A Chinese student assessed the implementation of the transshipment strategy in Xiamen Port, China. Lastly, a Malaysian student working for a ship management company, assessed the compliance of his company with the new Maritime Labour Convention.

We are proud to again receive such a variety of nationalities, representing the following countries; Brazil, Greece, India, Indonesia, Korea, Russia and Vietnam.

Indonesia Port Corporation II, Jakarta Indonesia, has provided us with seven students for the Master program in Rotterdam and Saigon New Port Holding, Saigon, Vietnam was able to send five students to the Master program. STC-Group has a long-term relationship with these organisations and NMU is delighted to contribute to the education of these students, enriching them with knowledge, practical insights and management skills focused on the shipping and transport industry.

On their first day, Mr. Ron Kooren, member of the Board of Directors kicked off by welcoming the group at STC’s headquarters at Lloydstraat. The maritime labour market in perspective, at NMU's last Master Class on 22 September

Rotterdam, 23 September 2011

On Thursday 22 September the third successful Master Class was organised by Netherlands Maritime University, with almost 70 participants! The central theme of the evening was “The maritime labour market; partners in Rotterdam for the World”.

Mr. Erik Hietbrink, Chairman Board of Directors of STC-Group was one of the inspirational speakers of the evening. He stressed the importance of high-level education to prepare future employees for the maritime labour market. He elaborated on the international position of seafarers, facing many difficulties such as governments failing to protect them from threats like piracy and criminalisation. He also stressed the sense of urgency for Rotterdam to take a prominent position as European Maritime Centre of Excellence. This opportunity can only be realised if stakeholders in Rotterdam’s maritime and port industrial cluster embrace a partnership approach and jointly lobby for this  Centre of Excellence position, in order to be able to compete with other important (European) port cities.

Mrs. Mai Elmar, Executive Director Het SS Rotterdam, and former Chief Marketing Officer and initiator of the branding campaign ”World Port World City”, followed up by challenging to “dream, think, dare and do”. She inspired the audience with her passion and told them to be proud of their contribution they make this city of Rotterdam, its port, its beauty and international importance. She concluded the Master Class with the message to also inspire others to be part of the diverse maritime labour market.

NMU's second Masters Class: Latest developments and lively discussions about fleet management!

Last Wednesday 22 June, the second Master Class of Netherlands Maritime University was held. This time the theme was fleet management, and the subtitle ‘Big, bigger, biggest!’. Again, we were delighted to receive a large group of 65 participants.
One of NMU’s appreciated associate lecturer Mr. Arjen Uytendaal (lecturer fleet management) elaborated on the economy of scale of tankers, dry bulk carriers and container vessels and speculations about ongoing scale enlargements or limitations and reasons behind it.
Mr. Harrold van der Meer, Director Maersk Ship Management Rotterdam, spoke about Maersk’s new Triple-E vessels, of which currently ten are being constructed. These vessels will be able to carry up to 18,000 TEU each! Mr. van der Meer explained how energy efficiency, economy of scale and the environment inspired the design of the Triple-E vessels. Following the presentations by the speakers a poll was held amongst the young professionals attending the Master Class on whether or not they expected container vessels to surpass 20,000 TEU in capacity in the next five years. The majority voted that container vessels would not surpass the 20,000 TEU limit. For more information about the Tripple- E vessels, visit the following link www.worldslargestship.com.

Afterwards, all participants were welcome to attend a networking drink in café Verhip, organised by Jong Havenvereniging (Association of Young Port Professionals), partner in the organisation of the Master Classes of NMU. If you would like to attend the next Master Class on 22 September 2011, please register via Masterclass@stc-nmu.eu.The central theme will be “World Class City, World Class Port; how to attract top talent and build the knowledge and innovation port of the future?”.

Press release: First Master Class of Netherlands Maritime University is a success!

Rotterdam, 20 May 2011

Netherlands Maritime University (NMU) and Jong Havenvereniging (Association for young port professionals) organise Master Classes for young professionals who work in and around the port.

The objective of this new initiative is to offer maritime and port professionals a platform for knowledge sharing and in-depth knowledge transfer on a variety of maritime and port related subjects .

The topics of the Master Classes are based on the courses that are offered in the NMU’s part-time Master Shipping and Transport program, which will start in October 2011. Leading maritime experts and (associate) lecturers from NMU combine theory and practice to form a challenging and diverse (evening) program. EachMaster Class focuses on a different topic.

On 19 May, the first Master Class was held at the STC-Group’s headquarters. The central theme of the evening was ‘safety and security in the versatile port of Rotterdam’.   Jan Gardeitchik, Head of the Harbour Master Policy department of the Port of Rotterdam, and Jasper Groen, associate lecturer at Netherlands Maritime University and partner at Van Steenderen Mainportlawyers, were the key speakers at this event. They elaborated on the plans to build an  LNG-terminal at the Maasvlakte and the implications this has for safety, risk management and traffic flows.  The realisation of the LNG-terminal and the introduction of LNG tankers into the logistic processes of the port of Rotterdam will undoubtedly come to serve as a leading example worldwide.

NMU is convinced that this first Master Class provided the participants with new insights into the role of the port of Rotterdam with regards to safety management in the port and the challenges it faces in maintaining a safe, while at the same time also a diverse and growing port. With 70 participants our expectations were exceeded and we conclude that many young port professionals are very interested in enhancing their knowledge about maritime and port related subjects and in discussing these subjects with experts and other young professionals. .

The next Master Class will be organised on 22 June, and the central theme will be fleet management. Later this year two more Master Classes will be organised in September and  November.

You are very welcome to attend one of the upcoming Master Classes. Please register  via Masterclass@stc-nmu.eu. For more information about Netherlands Maritime University or the part-time Master Shipping and Transport program, please visit www.stc-nmu.eu.

'Exchange program in The Netherlands: Eye opening traveling experience and enlightenment'

Written by Ahamedul Karim Chowdhury, A Bangladeshi student of Master in Shipping and Transport Netherlands Maritime University-South Korea

'Traveling is best hobby in the world it always gives us new experience. For eye opening it is the best way. Enlightenment broadly means wisdom or understanding enabling clarity of perception. As a part of our Master course we attended a month long exchange program in the Netherlands. It was an amazing and well organized exchange program managed by STC-NMU, The Netherlands. Our full course is running here in STC-NMU Campus in Gwangyang, South Korea. Question may arise that whether it was a study tour? I can simply say, no. It was not like a simple study tour, it was an amazing exchange program simultaneously with our normal course running as usual. We had an examination and also regular classes there as normal schedules. We used our time as like as Korea even though we have enjoyed a lot, and have seen different things. Accommodation was very nice and well organized. I didn’t get any shortage of anything...'

Subject: Information STC-Group activities in Korea

On September 10, 2007, Foundation STC-Group (STC-Group) will open a new branch school in Gwangyang-City in Korea.  This development is part of STC-Group’s vision to establish knowledge hubs in major transportation clusters in the world. The opening of a branch school STC-Korea is unprecedented being the first established Foreign Educational Institution in Korea. The school is located at the World Marine Center in Gwangyang, looking out over the port activities. The location is strategically chosen in the Gwangyang Bay Free Economic Zone, one of Korea’s largest ports.

A feasibility study conducted in 2005, financed by the Netherlands Ministry of Economic Affairs under the PESP programme showed there is a need for professional educated people in the areas of ports, logistics and supply chain management on different levels.

This study formed the basis for further elaborations with Korean about the contents of the education programme. These discussions were concluded with a Memorandum of Understanding with counterpartners, namely Gwangyang City government, Korea Container Transport Association, Gwangyang Bay Free Economic Zone, Jeollanam-Do Province government.

Initially the education and training services will focus on two core elements:

  • (short) courses for professionals already working in the port and logistics business, such as transport english, shipping management, freight forwarding, supply chain management and ISPS port security courses;
  • a Master degree programme ‘Shipping and Transport’ which will start in March 2008, similar to the Master programme starting in Rotterdam. This will be a completely English language curriculum.

In addition, there are a number of other initiatives under way to further foster cooperation and knowledge sharing in the field of ports and logistics education between Rotterdam and Gwangyang.

STC-Korea will offer a unique education model, which is based on an old Confucian saying: ‘I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand’.  STC-Group is convinced that hear and see leads to fleeting knowledge, while do and experience is crucial for acquiring good competencies. This point of view is the didactical basis for the choice to use simulators for education and training.

STC-Korea will be officially opened on the 10th of September 2007. The opening ceremony will be done by the acting ambassador of the Royal Kingdom of the Netherlands, Korean minister of Finance and Economy (to be confirmed) vice-minister of Maritime Affairs, , governor from Jeollanam-Province, mayor of Gwangyang-City,  high representatives from the ministry of Education, Yeosu Regional office, commissioner of Gwangyang Bay Free Economic Zone Authority, and delegates from a number of education institutions in Greater Gwangyang area.

The STC-Group is a world-wide strategic combination of well-established education, training, research, support, consultancy and implementation service providers for the entire shipping, port, transport and logistics chain as well as for the port-related oil and chemical industry.Next to the activities in the Netherlands, the STC-Group has knowledge hubs and subsidiaries in countries as Vietnam, South-Africa, Oman, Korea and the Philippines. In another fifty countries it provides consultancy, training and education projects. More than 500 people are employed at the STC-Group.
